Only ECE22.06 standard helmets allowed in Europe starting July

From July onwards, only helmets that comply with the new legislation will be approved.

As a drastic measure in ensuring the level of safety of motorcyclists on the road, the European Union will only allow the use of helmets with ECE22.06 standards.

ECE22.06 is the latest standard introduced starting January this year. All helmet manufacturers selling their products on the continent have to comply with stricter requirements than the previous ECE22.05.

The ECE220.6 test is more rugged and rigorous than the ECE22.05 test. There are more new tests conducted including the rotational test. The impact angle is also now more comprehensive and covers a wider area than before.

According to international media reports, the enforcement of the ECE22.06 standard will see helmet manufacturers produce thicker shells, especially those made with ‘polycarbonate’ (plastic) material.

Although materials such as fibreglass and carbon fibre can maintain the same level of thickness but the inner layer of polystyrene will certainly be reprocessed.

Apart from that, the latest standard will also affect the price of a quality helmet and will see the ECE22.06 helmet more expensive than the ECE22.05.

However, the use of ECE22.05 helmets is still allowed with this latest enforcement only involving the aspect of manufacturers who are required to produce helmets with the latest standards.
