Once upon a time, especially in the 80s and 90s, the world motorcycle market was flooded with 400cc four-cylinder machines. Development of such motorcycles halted shortly thereafter until Kawasaki launched the ZX-25R in July 2020.
However, an OEM manufacturer in China, Colove, is reportedly developing a 400cc four-cylinder engine.
Interestingly, reports in China claim the engine is more powerful than the 400cc platforms found on the Honda CBR400RR, Kawasaki ZXR400 and Yamaha FZR400 which on average offer 60hp.
On the other hand, this Colove-developed engine offers 74hp at 13,500rpm and 44Nm at 12,000rpm.
The high power is achieved with a larger bore and shorter stroke (59mm x 36.5mm) and is capable of producing higher revs than previous Japanese -made engines.
The development of this new platform also gives the impression that there are several 400cc Supersports models to be introduced in the Chinese market soon.
The ability of Chinese companies to develop a powerful 400cc 4-cylinder engine also indirectly proves that the market in the country is growing rapidly.
