After a long wait, the selection session for the 2nd season of the SIC MiniGP Championship took place for two days from 29-30 March 2021 at the Sepang International Kart Circuit (SIKC). A total of 25 young riders aged 9 to 14 years old have been selected to participate in this grassroots two-wheeled motorsport program.

For the SIC MiniGP season 2, a total of 63 participants have registered for this selection session. They are required to bring the same basic racing equipment as the previous edition. The selection session which was supposed to be held for one day only had to be postponed and extended to the next day due to unsatisfactory weather factors.

During the selection session, the riders have to go through various tests such as machinery handling, mental, physical endurance and so on. Among the criteria assessed during the selection session were in terms of riding technique, machinery handling, level of focus, communication skills, fitness level and others.

The program has borne fruit where Hakim Danish, the champion of the first edition of the SIC MiniGP championship for the 160cc category last season has performed well at the Asia Talent Cup in Qatar recently while raising the credibility of grassroots program initiatives to find backers and hone talent to open the opportunity to compete in international tournaments in two -wheeled motorsports in line with “Impian Ke MotoGPTM”.

The SIC MiniGP Championship season 2 this year will take place in 4 rounds with a total of 10 races where Round 1 on 19-20 June 2021, Round 2 on 17-18 July 2021, Round 3 on 14-15 August 2021 and the Final Round on 10-September 2021. Any changes to the race calendar are subject to the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

ZULFAHMI KHAIRUDDIN (ZK Racing Team Manager)

“I am very excited to start this 2nd season and hope to train them as best I can to produce more competitive riders through this program. I thank you for the support given by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and all technical sponsors for this program. It is certainly not easy for us to find the best talents to complete the lineup of riders this season. Most of them had made initial preparations in terms of study and training before attending the selection session and I was impressed with the skills they demonstrated. ”

AZHAN SHAFRIMAN HANIF (CEO of SIC)

“I would also like to thank YB Dato ‘Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, as well as the staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), National Security Council (MKN) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) for their efforts and cooperation to activate I am confident that this program will produce more talented riders in the future and will be able to make Malaysia’s name on the world stage.”
