According to statics, 69,267 summonses were issued nationwide against motorists last year for running a red light. Whereas this year, between January and November 2020, 52,179 summonses were issued for the same offence. In particular almost 50% summonses were issued against motorcyclists. Especially those in E-hailing or parcel delivery services being the main culprits.

Federal police traffic investigations and enforcement department director DCP Datuk Azisman Alias said the operation codenamed “Ops Lampu Isyarat Merah” / Operation Red Light will be carried out until the end of this year 2020 (31st December 2020). The purpose of this operation is to educate and instil awareness to motorists to comply with traffic light rules.

Under this operation, those caught running red lights will either be issued with summonses on the spot or will have their vehicle information recorded for further action. The offenders can face a fine of up to MYR 2,000 or up to 6 months jail sentence.

Please be aware, follow road traffic laws and don’t run red lights!
