We’re still three weeks away from getting to know in full detail what BMW Motorrad has installed on their new maxitrail R1250 GS, the successor of the very popular and best-selling model of the German brand, the R1200 GS. But the Munich based manufacturer couldn’t wait any longer, and they’ve released and official video explaining the most important feature of the R1250 GS: the ShiftCam system, or in other words, a variable valve timing system.
To start with, BMW confirms the new 1250 cc displacement for the big adventure GS. But the ShiftCam is what’s going to set this new GS apart for its rivals!
The variable valve timing system works directly on the camshaft that has two distinct profiles. The first is used when the load is light, reducing the valve lift for optimal throttle action at lower speeds. But when more torque is needed, the camshaft will slide to its right side and using its bigger profile, maximizing the opening of the valves and getting more power to the back wheel.
And speaking of power, BMW will bump the twin boxer engine to 136 hp and 143 Nm of torque.
Although we expect some changes on the design of the popular GS, from what we can see on the video, BMW Motorrad hasn’t done a radical change in the design. Some small changes were made, but on the video it’s hard to tell exactly what will make her different from the outgoing model R1200 GS.
We will need to expect a few more weeks until BMW explains exactly everything they’ve done on the new R1250 GS.
