Is BMW thinking of building a new line-up of middle-sized bikes?

Is BMW thinking of building a new line-up of middle-sized bikes?

It’s no secret BMW Motorrad is working on a new 1000 cc superbike, and the next-gen S1000RR should be ready to be shown in production form at the two biggest motorcycles shows INTERMOT and EICMA, in Cologne and Milan respectively.

But apart from the flagship S1000RR project, the German motorcycle manufacturer is also working on other new models, and the latest news seem to point out to BMW bringing a host of new bikes for the middle-sized segments.

The bikes you see in this article were created by design artist Nicolas Petit and commissioned by Wunderlich, a known accessories brand for BMW motorcycles.

And what are these bikes?

There’s a supersport model dubbed S675RR, a sport-tourer model known as S675XR and also a naked S675R.

This might sound too good to be true, but we know for a fact that BMW Motorrad, back in 2010, already had a few engines created to be installed on a baby S1000RR. But the decline in sales of supersport motorcycles halted BMW’s plans, and those engines were left on a shelf at the Munich factory collecting dust… until now it seems!

This middleweight engine can be an in-line four cylinder, but in 2010, the then BMW Motorrad president Hendrik von Kuenheim, told us that that engine can also be a three-cylinder 675 cc unit.

The design of these new motorcycles should mimic the looks from the bigger RR, R and XR versions, and the conceptual art from Nicolas Petit is a pretty good indication of what we might expect BMW Motorrad to roll out at the big motorcycle shows this year.

The fact that some Japanese rivals like Kawasaki and Suzuki are reviving the supersport segment with new models, and with Yamaha and MV Agusta having great success in this segment with their R6 and F3 models, should be a good incentive for BMW to create these new middle-sized motorcycles.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
