In a time when Japanese workshops are locked in a thrilling arms race to build the most jaw-dropping resto-mods, it’s easy to mistake the scene as something new. Yet, true aficionados know this movement has been decades in the making. Take, for example, the latest jaw-dropper from Japan’s famed Shabon Dama—an immaculately reimagined Kawasaki Zephyr 1100RS that has quietly evolved over twenty years into what the team now proudly calls the “ultimate incarnation” of a 1990s road bike.

This navy blue beast isn’t just a tribute to an era—it’s a rolling manifesto of obsessive craftsmanship. The journey began humbly enough. More than two decades ago, the owner walked into Shabon Dama’s shop seeking a carburettor upgrade. From that first modification, the bike became a recurring guest at the shop, returning every few years for more tweaks, upgrades, and eventually, a complete transformation.

Built with Time, Not Deadlines

The Zephyr gradually and deliberately transformed from a mild street bike into a full-blown custom legend. The builders scrutinised, improved, and refined every component. They jigged, straightened, and reinforced the steel cradle frame at eight strategic points to create an ultra-stiff chassis capable of far more than factory specs allowed. After perfecting the structure, they powder-coated the frame for durability and treated other parts with diamond coatings, anodising, carbon lamination, and RX finishes for both performance and style.

Performance Meets Precision

While the Zephyr originally came with an 18/17 inch wheel setup, Shabon Dama knew better. A custom 17-inch front conversion required in-house triple clamps and a bespoke steering stem developed from years of race testing. The suspension was upgraded with HyperPro AH1 forks, chosen for their street-tuned adjustability. At the same time, the rear end boasts Öhlins twin shocks paired with a gleaming WHEELIE 7N01 billet swingarm—an elegant contrast against the blacked-out frame.

Wheel upgrades were essential. Out went the Dymags; in came OZ Racing Cattiva magnesium wheels, wrapped in Michelin rubber for maximum grip. Stopping power is delivered via Brembo callipers, Sunstar floating discs, and Gale Speed master cylinders. This ensures the bike decelerates as confidently as it accelerates.

The Heart of the Beast

Beneath the sleek shell is a re-engineered 1107cc engine with 75mm Wiseco pistons. The crank and transmission are fully balanced and overhauled. A ported twin-spark head, Yoshimura cams, and TMR-MJN 38mm carbs with dual stacks fuel the motor. A hand-built titanium exhaust, built in sections, exits through a lightweight canister to save weight and space.

To manage heat, the bike employs a large oil cooler and a meticulous plumbing setup. A full rewire integrates a Uotani SPII ignition and ETC 2.0 system, with race-spec Stack gauges feeding the rider the essentials.

Beauty Beyond the Bolt-ons

The paintwork, executed by YF Design, is a showstopper in its own right. The owner dreamed up the navy blue and gold palette long before the build began. It’s been executed to absolute perfection. With carbon fibre body panels and a hand-crafted aluminium tank, the visual result is striking yet elegant. The pinstripes, shadowing, and custom logos tie the whole aesthetic together.

Not Just a Motorcycle—A Legacy

This Zephyr isn’t just a restored classic—it’s a story of passion, loyalty, and slow-brewed excellence. Every part has a purpose, and every finish was chosen with intention. Every bolt tells a story. For Shabon Dama, this build represents not just a client’s dream, but a shop’s legacy forged in time, technique, and tenacity.

After twenty years in the making, the Shabon Dama Zephyr 1100RS doesn’t just revive the spirit of the ’90s. It elevates it. It’s not a resto-mod. It’s the benchmark.
