Michelin blames Silverstone for excessive tire wear

After the Grand Prix at Silverstone, several premier class riders complained about the tires, with traction rates dropping well ahead of schedule in many cases. Piero Taramasso, one of Michelin’s strongmen, explained what happened.

‘Overall we have noticed a higher use of the tires both at the front and at the rear when comparing the race with the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. This caused a decrease in their income. We had predicted that there would be a drop in performance after ten laps. However, it arrived much sooner; for some drivers, it was just after five laps.’, revealed the manager in statements to GPOne, not without blaming the Silverstone circuit: – The point is that Silverstone is a very abrasive track for the tires and being regular has always been a difficulty at this circuit. It had been two years lost here and we brought a new tire to the race. One that we had already introduced last season. We had never tested it there. We ended up suffering excessive wear and in some cases, there were irregular situations, but it wasn’t linked to the type of bike, because in the first six places there were riders from six different factories.
