New Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade to get special aerodynamic mirrors

New Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade to get special aerodynamic mirrors

Honda is working on aerodynamic mirrors to get the same downforce effect as manufacturers get from MotoGP style wings.

We all know that Honda is working on a new superbike and that it will be very special. So special that Honda plans on revamping its World Superbike team to fit the new bike. Now, more details emerge that give us an insight on just how special this new CBR1000RR Fireblade will be.

According to a new patent registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Honda wants to use the new aerodynamic strategies of race bikes on its new Fireblade for 2020.

But instead of installing MotoGP style wings on the side and front fairings, the new Honda superbike will use special aerodynamic mirrors.

Honda engineers believe that they might use mirrors to obtain the same downforce effect as the wings. The mirrors on the new Fireblade will feature air channels, a concave surface, and a convex surface. This will create the desired downforce effect.

To maximize the effect, the tip of each mirror will be slightly folded. Just like what we see on the wings of a commercial airplane.

If indeed Honda manages to use these special aerodynamic mirrors, the Japanese manufacturer won’t need to add anything to the fairings of the bike. They will simply use a regular component of the bike. No extra parts needed.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
