MotoGP – Joan Mir on his way to join Suzuki in 2019

Joan Mir looks all set to make a move to MotoGP by joining Ecstar Suzuki for the 2019 and 2020 seasons

It seems that nowadays all we talk is about riders negotiating new contracts for the 2019 MotoGP season and beyond, and the fact that most of the main riders already have new deals signed, doesn’t seem to lower our interest in trying to know who’s going where.

This time around the news of a possible deal between Suzuki and Spanish talent Joan Mir are heating up the MotoGP paddock.

The current Moto3 champion and Moto2 rider for the Marc VDS team has been under the radar of many manufacturers for long time now, but the recent results obtained by Joan Mir, especially the third place finish in Le Mans, managed to spike the interest from teams that are still looking for riders.

One of those teams is Ecstar Suzuki.

The Japanese team closed in a deal to retain the services of Alex Rins for two more seasons a few weeks ago, and everything seemed to be on the right path for Jorge Lorenzo to join Suzuki. But the deal with Lorenzo fell through, and as it seems, all because Suzuki changed their focus to Joan Mir.

According to well-placed sources on the MotoGP paddock, Mir may have already signed a two-year deal with Ecstar Suzuki for the 2019 and 2020 MotoGP seasons. He had an offer on the table for a few weeks now, but Honda had an option to sign the young Spanish, an option that was only valid until the 24th May.

Now, Joan Mir is completely free to sign with whoever he wants, and he wants Suzuki!

This information isn’t official yet, but everything points out to Joan Mir being Alex Rins new teammate from next season in MotoGP.
