The Transport Ministry is open to introducing incentives for the disposal of old motorcycles, but the initiative will depend on support from local motorcycle manufacturers.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government is willing to consider such a programme if manufacturers step forward with proposals, similar to initiatives previously introduced by national carmakers like Proton Holdings and Perodua for older vehicles.
Currently, there are no incentives specifically for scrapping motorcycles. However, the ministry recently received a proposal from the Malaysian Motorcycle and Scooter Association regarding a potential programme.
Loke explained that any future initiative would likely prioritise motorcycles that are locally assembled (CKD), as government assistance is aimed at supporting local manufacturing companies.
The proposal is still at an early stage, but the ministry has indicated it is open to discussions if the industry shows interest.
Speaking at the 28th Balik Kampung Road Safety Campaign in Seremban, Loke also reminded riders to prioritise safety, especially by using helmets that meet proper standards and replacing helmets that no longer provide adequate protection.
