Reigning MX2 World Champion Simon Laengenfelder has committed his future to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, signing a new contract that will see the German talent remain in orange through 2027 as he prepares to defend his crown and build towards a future move to the MXGP class.
The 21-year-old secured the 2025 MX2 FIM Motocross World Championship at the final round in Australia, earning the coveted #1 plate after years of steady progression within the KTM structure. With his renewal confirmed, Laengenfelder is now set to mount another title challenge aboard the works KTM 250 SX-F, alongside teammate Sacha Coenen in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive MX2 campaign.
Laengenfelder’s journey with KTM has been one of consistent growth. After stepping into a full-time MX2 Grand Prix role in 2021, he quickly announced himself on the world stage by claiming his first GP victory at the 2022 season opener in Great Britain and finishing inside the top three of the championship. He continued to establish himself as a title contender in 2023 and 2024 with further top-three championship finishes before finally putting everything together in 2025 to clinch the world title.
The contract extension signals KTM’s strong confidence in both his current form and long-term potential, with the manufacturer viewing Laengenfelder as a key figure not only in MX2 but also as a future contender in the premier MXGP category.
Speaking on the renewal, Laengenfelder expressed enthusiasm about continuing his journey with the Austrian brand and embracing the next phase of his career. Having spent several formative years under KTM’s factory programme, he now faces the challenge of defending his title, historically one of the toughest tasks in the MX2 division while further refining his racecraft and consistency.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager Joel Smets highlighted that the team recognised Laengenfelder’s potential early in his development, noting that his championship success was the result of sustained hard work and maturity. Smets also emphasised that defending the MX2 crown presents a different level of pressure, but believes the German rider enters the new season more experienced, motivated, and determined to prove that his 2025 title was no one-off achievement.
KTM Motorsports Director Pit Beirer echoed those sentiments, pointing to Laengenfelder’s clear progression over six seasons on KTM machinery. According to Beirer, the 2025 title was the culmination of years of development, consistency, and incremental improvements that transformed him into a regular Grand Prix-winning threat. He added that Laengenfelder still has room to grow and remains capable of further breakthroughs, making the contract extension a natural step for both rider and team.
As he heads into the upcoming seasons, Laengenfelder’s immediate focus will be on defending the MX2 championship and potentially becoming the first Red Bull KTM rider since 2019 to secure back-to-back titles in the class. At the same time, his continued development and long-term deal place him firmly on the trajectory toward an eventual transition to MXGP, where his speed, composure, and championship-winning pedigree could position him as one of the next generation of title contenders.
