Honda HRC rider Iker Lecuona has undergone successful surgery in Valencia after sustaining fractures to his left distal forearm (ulna and radius) during a multi-rider incident in the opening WorldSBK race at Balaton Park Circuit. The crash, in which Lecuona was an innocent party, forced him to withdraw from both the remainder of the Hungarian WorldSBK round and the upcoming Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance race.
The surgical procedure took place on Monday, 28 July, by Dr. Eduardo Sánchez Alepuz at IMED Valencia Hospital. According to Honda, the operation was a success, achieving the required stabilisation of the injury. Lecuona spent the night at the facility and was discharged the following morning.
As a result of his injury, Lecuona will also miss the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours event scheduled for Sunday, 3 August. His Honda teammate, Xavi Vierge, will take over his duties for the endurance classic.
There will be a follow-up medical evaluation for Lecuona on Monday, 4 August. Honda HRC has assured fans that further updates on his recovery will be provided in due course.
The incident marks a frustrating setback for the Spanish rider, who has been steadily gaining momentum in the WorldSBK paddock. All eyes will now be on his recovery timeline as the season continues.
