Looking for a reliable, do-it-all touring machine that won’t break the bank? The Modenas Kawasaki Versys 650 might just be your perfect match. This adventure-style middleweight bike continues to prove why it’s one of the most trusted names in its category.

Since its debut back in 2007, the Versys 650 has carved a solid reputation for itself by blending the best of sportbike dynamics, dual-sport practicality, and adventure-bike comfort. And now, under the Modenas badge, the latest model comes with a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Built for Malaysia’s Mix of Roads

Malaysia’s road conditions can be pretty unpredictable, one minute you’re on smooth highway tarmac, next thing you know, you’re dodging potholes or riding through uneven kampung roads. Luckily, the Versys 650 handles all that without fuss.

It’s got a comfortable upright riding position, a tall adjustable windscreen, and suspension that really smooths out the bumps. During my ride to Putrajaya, over some bumpy backroads, the bike soaked up the uneven tarmac effortlessly. Long-distance rides feel easy, and even short city trips aren’t a hassle.

The Engine: Smooth, Punchy & Reliable

Under the fairing sits a 649cc parallel-twin engine, pushing out 67hp and 61Nm of torque. It’s the same tried-and-tested engine from the Kawasaki lineup, and it performs well, enough power to overtake on the highway, yet calm and manageable in slow traffic.

In jammed roads like Jalan Tun Razak or around PJ during peak hours, the engine is super forgiving. No jerky throttle, no overheating issues, and no need to constantly work the clutch. Just smooth, steady riding, even when it rains.

Tech-Savvy Features You’ll Appreciate

Despite its rugged looks, the Versys 650 packs some solid tech. ABS and traction control, come as standard, making this bike safer and easier to manage in all conditions, especially when the roads get wet or uneven. Thanks to its long-travel suspension, adjustable both front and rear, the ride stayed plush, stable, and controlled throughout.

Braking performance is sharp, too. With dual front discs and a single rear disc, the stopping power is reliable, even in the rain. The ABS does a great job of keeping things in check when grip levels drop.

Road Manners & Real-World Comfort

On the road, the Versys 650 shines in every scenario. Whether it’s crawling through KL traffic, riding in the rain, or tackling a long-distance trip like my recent ride to Putrajaya, it remains impressively composed.

The seat is comfy for hours of riding, and the windscreen helps cut fatigue on longer rides. In the city, its slim profile and wide bars make it easy to filter through traffic, and the upright seating gives you great visibility of your surroundings.

Thanks to low-end torque and smooth gear changes, it’s an easy bike to manage in low-speed traffic too, ideal for both experienced and beginner riders. The low seat height of just 78cm makes it very beginner-friendly, and the engine is forgiving enough that you won’t easily stall.

On the Twisties

The bike also stays planted through corners and the throttle is super predictable. While it’s not built to be a sportbike, there’s more than enough power and balance to keep things exciting on the bends. The suspension handles dips and undulations well, and the slipper clutch helps you keep things smooth when downshifting into tighter corners.

Super Practical in City & Highway Use

Despite being a touring bike, the Versys 650 doesn’t feel bulky or hard to handle. Filtering through traffic in KL is quite manageable thanks to its narrow body and upright handlebar.

Seat height is about 78cm, so even shorter riders won’t struggle to reach the ground. It’s also light enough that new riders won’t feel intimidated, but experienced riders will still enjoy the torque and handling. Plus, the bike doesn’t drink petrol like crazy. You’ll get decent mileage, especially when cruising on highways like PLUS or LPT2.

Verdict: A Solid All-Rounder

At the end of the day, the Versys 650 is the kind of bike that quietly wins you over. It’s not flashy or high-strung, but it’s incredibly capable, comfortable, and versatile. Whether you’re commuting, touring, or just enjoying weekend rides, this bike handles it all with ease.

For RM36,200 brand new, it’s a seriously good value for what you’re getting, a refined engine, premium features, and go-anywhere comfort. And if you’re on a tighter budget? No worries, we’ve got plenty of used Versys 650s available at the iMotorbike showroom in Glenmarie, Shah Alam. Come by and take a look!
