Martín’s absence also means that MotoGP’s Season Launch event in Bangkok will proceed without the reigning champion in attendance.

Surgery on Jorge Martín’s right hand has been successfully completed. The medical team at the Quirón Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona, led by Dr. Xavier Mir, confirmed the positive outcome of the operation.

The Spanish rider suffered a high-side crash on the first day of testing in Sepang, resulting in a closed fracture of the 5th metacarpal head of his right hand and a closed fracture of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th metatarsals in his left foot. After an overnight stay at the Aurelius Hospital in Nilai, Martín returned to Europe for surgery at Quirón Dexeus Clinic on Friday morning.

The fractures in his left foot did not require surgery, and recovery timelines will be assessed in the coming days.

Dr. Xavier Mir, PhD MD RAMC: “The rider Jorge Martín has undergone surgery for a displaced fracture of the head of the right fifth metacarpal, with reduction and percutaneous fixation using an intramedullary screw. The functional recovery will start in a short time period, according to the clinical status.”

Massimo Rivola, CEO of Aprilia Racing: “I’m glad that Jorge’s operation went well and now we hope for a speedy recovery, his health is the priority. Regarding the crash, I would like to make it clear that our data in no way confirms the statements made by Piero Taramasso. I believe that the riders’ safety should be the priority, and I have already suggested he set a meeting with all the teams in order to deal constructively with what is clearly a critical situation, as evidenced by the number of injuries.”

Aprilia has confirmed that reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martín will miss the upcoming Buriram test, meaning the Spaniard will enter the opening round of the season at the same venue with just 13 laps of 2025 pre-season testing under his belt. Test rider Lorenzo Savadori will take over some of Martín’s testing duties.

Several other riders also sustained injuries in Sepang. Fabio Di Giannantonio (broken left collarbone) and Raul Fernandez (fractured metacarpal bone in his left hand) both underwent surgery. Di Giannantonio is expected to miss the Buriram test, with VR46 team manager Pablo Nieto stating: “We know that his surgery takes 15 or 20 days to recover, but it’s a pity to miss winter tests.”

Trackhouse team principal Davide Brivio hinted that Fernandez might return sooner than expected: “Now we wait to get [Raul] back as soon as possible, maybe even before the race.”

The Thai Grand Prix weekend begins with Friday practice on February 28.
