Marc Márquez has unveiled his list of the greatest-ever MotoGP riders, and it’s one that might surprise fans. Despite his six premier-class championships and widespread recognition as one of the sport’s all-time greats, Marquez humbly chose to leave his own name off the list.
“I will never put myself on this list,” Márquez said during an appearance on a Spanish podcast, as reported by Gazzetta.
The Honda-turned-Ducati star instead named Giacomo Agostini, Ángel Nieto, Mick Doohan, Jorge Lorenzo, and Valentino Rossi as his top picks.
Agostini, the most successful rider in history, holds 15 world titles, including eight in the premier class between 1966 and 1975 with MV Agusta and Yamaha. The Italian legend has often expressed admiration for Márquez’s talent. Nieto, with 13 titles, remains a Spanish icon and the master of the smaller categories.
Australia’s Mick Doohan, a five-time top-class champion, is another rider Márquez admires. Doohan’s dominance with Honda, especially after overcoming a life-threatening leg injury, set the standard for many.
Jorge Lorenzo, a rider who shares the same nationality as Márquez, won three MotoGP titles, and was both a rival and a teammate of Márquez during his career. Their battles, particularly during Lorenzo’s Yamaha days, were legendary.
And then there’s Valentino Rossi, the Italian legend whose rivalry with Márquez has been one of the most talked-about storylines in MotoGP history. Rossi’s nine world titles, eight in the premier class, cement his place as a modern-era icon, but their infamous clashes, especially during the dramatic 2015 season, remain etched in fans’ memories.
While Márquez modestly overlooked himself, there’s no doubt his name will eventually join the pantheon of MotoGP legends. His impact on the sport, alongside the dominance of Rossi in the modern era, has left an indelible mark on fans and rivals alike.
With Márquez now chasing his seventh premier-class title aboard a factory Ducati, the comparisons to Rossi and his chance to match the Italian’s eight premier-class titles will only intensify.
Meanwhile, his relationship with Rossi’s protégé, Francesco Bagnaia, ensures that this legendary rivalry continues to shape MotoGP’s future.
