Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac Racing) clinched his maiden MotoGP World Championship at the season finale at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The Spaniard secured his historic title with a controlled third-place finish, holding off outgoing champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), who claimed victory on the day but fell short in the overall standings.
Martín aka Martinator, 26, delivered a consistent and tactical performance throughout the season, earning the championship on home soil in front of a passionate crowd. While Bagnaia pushed hard all weekend, winning both the Sprint and feature race, Martín’s impressive 24-point lead heading into the final round proved insurmountable.
A Historic Win for an Independent Rider
Martín’s triumph marks a milestone in MotoGP history as he becomes the first independent rider to win the championship in the modern era. Competing for Prima Pramac Racing, a satellite Ducati team, Martín demonstrated that private teams could challenge factory squads in the sport’s highest echelon.
This achievement not only solidifies Martín’s status as one of MotoGP’s rising stars but also serves as inspiration for satellite teams aiming to disrupt the dominance of factory outfits.
Martín expressed after claiming his first World title, “It sounds amazing, I don’t know what to say because I’m completely shocked.
“This is for my people, my family, to the people that are supporting me this is for them. The last few laps I couldn’t even ride, I started crying a bit, it was a really emotional race.
“Thanks to my people, this is for them, it’s been a long journey with a lot of crashes and big injuries. But finally we are here and thanks to all the people and all the fans, also for Valencia with a Spanish rider.
“I hope we can keep improving and enjoy the moment – this is the most important thing, leave the present and enjoy the moment.”
The Battle That Defined 2024
The 2024 season was a rollercoaster for both Martín and Pecco, with the championship lead swapping hands multiple times. Martín’s aggressive riding style and consistent point-scoring paid off, even as he faced setbacks, including critical mistakes like a high-profile bike swap and a few costly crashes.
Bagnaia, meanwhile, showcased his champion’s mettle, dominating several rounds and delivering a flawless double victory in Barcelona. However, a few key errors earlier in the season ultimately cost him the chance to defend his title.
Despite his runner-up finish in the championship, Bagnaia remains a formidable competitor and will return next season alongside six-time world champion Marc Marquez at the Factory Ducati Lenovo Team.
Farewell to Prima Pramac Racing
For Martín, this championship win also serves as a bittersweet farewell to Prima Pramac Racing, as he prepares to join Aprilia Racing next season. His remarkable journey with the satellite team will go down in history as a testament to determination, resilience, and teamwork.
The Spanish rider also shared, “I worked hard, and I have made a lot of sacrifices at home every day to try and become a better man. Last season, I had the opportunity, but I think I was not prepared to win but this year I felt it. I felt it was my year, so thanks to Pramac, to Ducati for giving me the opportunity to have an amazing bike these four years and to give me the opportunity to fight until the end with Pecco, who was amazing.”
A Season to Remember
And of course, this season showcased some of the most thrilling battles MotoGP has seen in years. From Martín’s relentless push to Bagnaia’s fierce defence of his crown, every race added a new chapter to an unforgettable story.
As the curtain falls on the 2024 MotoGP season, Jorge Martín stands atop the podium as a champion who defied expectations, made history for independent teams, and proved that sheer determination and consistency could conquer even the fiercest rivals.
MotoGP fans now eagerly await 2025, where fresh rivalries and new challenges will undoubtedly bring more drama, excitement, and unforgettable moments.
