Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has launched the 4th generation Yamaha MT-09 in Malaysia, showcasing a series of significant technical enhancements and a bold, aggressive design for 2024.

Powered by an 889cc three-cylinder CP3 DOHC engine, the new MT-09 delivers 117 hp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm, paired with an updated fuel injection system that enhances throttle response for dynamic performance in various riding conditions.

The bike features a 6-speed transmission with Yamaha’s third-generation quickshifter for clutch-free gear changes. However, it does not include Yamaha’s latest Y-AMT technology, as this model was first revealed at EICMA last year.

Built on a lightweight and more rigid aluminium Deltabox frame, the 2024 MT-09 ensures improved cornering stability and agility. The suspension setup includes a fully adjustable 41mm KYB inverted front fork and a re-tuned KYB monoshock rear suspension, offering a more controlled ride. Brembo’s radial master cylinder, dual 298mm front discs, and a 245mm rear disc provide enhanced braking, with ABS as standard.

Advanced electronics include traction control (TCS), a two-channel ABS system, and five riding modes: Sport, Street, Rain, and two customizable settings. Additional features include a back-slip regulator, cruise control, and an automatic shutoff for traffic lights.

A new 3.5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity enables smartphone pairing via the Garmin StreetCross app and Yamaha Y-Connect. The display shows calls, messages, and other vital information, with a USB-C port for charging.

Design updates include a sleeker body with redesigned LED headlights, a slimmer fuel tank, and dual air intakes for improved performance. The 14-litre fuel tank remains unchanged from previous models.

Overall, the 4th generation Yamaha MT-09 strikes a balance between power, control, and cutting-edge technology, making it an appealing choice for riders seeking a high-performance naked bike with a modern, sportier design and a lovely three-cylinder.

Priced at RM57,998, the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 is a locally assembled (CKD) model from the HLYM factory in Sungai Buloh. It will be available in two colour options, Tech Black and Midnight Cyan, with sales starting on October 15, 2024.
