Local rider Hafizh Syahrin recently made a notable return to the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) as a wildcard entry at Portimão, racing with the JDT Racing Team, which he also represents in the FIM Asian Road Racing Championship (ARRC).
Supported by Ducati’s official test team, this comeback marks Hafizh’s first WorldSBK appearance since losing his full-time ride at the end of 2023.
In an interview with Speedweek.com, Hafizh expressed his aspirations for a full-time return to WorldSBK with the JDT Racing Team. “Yes, we want to try that,” he confirmed.
“However, time is short, and the team has only been around since December, so just a little over half a year. I have to thank my boss that it worked out with Portimão.”
Reflecting on his wildcard performance, Hafizh noted the heightened competition level in the World Championship compared to 2023.
“Things are going pretty well in the ARRC, although the field in the World Championship is stronger, and I noticed that the level has increased overall. Even with a good bike, it’s not easy, and it’s difficult without previous test rides. But the guest start was a good experience, and it was nice to see that we were able to improve with each session,” he added.
When asked about potential involvement from Petronas, a longtime supporter throughout his career, Hafizh hinted at ongoing discussions. “We’re talking about it,” he said. “I don’t know what the future will bring. I’m concentrating on my job; management is doing it. My hope is that we will enter with a good package. We’ll see.”
Currently, Hafizh is six points behind Indonesian rider Andi Faridi, who leads the ARRC overall championship standings in the Asia Superbike 1000cc category with 116 points.
The next round of the ARRC will take place at Hafizh’s home circuit, Petronas Sepang International Circuit, from September 13 to 15.
