Leading motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha has announced the introduction of Y-AMT (Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission) technology, marking a significant milestone in automatic gear shifting.

Following the lead of BMW, Honda, and KTM, Yamaha’s latest system is engineered to enhance the sports performance of its motorcycles and also aims to elevate the riding experience, indicating a new era of advanced shifting and sporty riding.

Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT) switch

How It Works

Yamaha’s new Y-AMT technology offers riders the flexibility to choose between manual and automatic gear shifting. Riders can shift gears manually using their fingers and thumbs or let the bike handle it automatically. With the ‘MT’ function, riders can take full control of gear changes.

The system uses two electronic actuators to manage the clutch and gear shifting, eliminating the need for manual controls. Additionally, Yamaha assures that this latest technological addition won’t make the bike any wider.

Y-AMT integrates with the ride-by-wire throttle, allowing for riding modes and cruise control. In manual mode, riders can use mounted paddles marked ‘+’ and ‘-’ on the handlebars to shift up and down.

The switchgear block is designed to keep the thumb on the bars for maximum control, while the index finger manages the shifts easily. Yamaha also has designed the lever position and stroke for smooth and effortless operation.

Ride with ease

For ultimate ease, users can also enable a fully automatic mode. This mode offers two gear change options. The ‘D’ mode provides a softer shift feel, with gear changes occurring at lower engine revs for a smoother ride.

If you’re looking for more performance, the ‘D+’ mode is available. This setting speeds up shift times and maintains gears at higher engine speeds, providing a more dynamic riding experience.

Future Plans

Yamaha intends to roll out Y-AMT technology across a range of models in the near future, enhancing sport riding, touring, and commuting experiences.

Although specific models have yet to be confirmed, a video posted on Yamaha Europe and Australia’s YouTube channels hints at a potential worldwide release.
