In the age of environmental consciousness and technological innovation, transportation choices are evolving rapidly, with electric bikes (e-bikes) and conventional bikes at the forefront of the debate. Electric bikes have surged in popularity due to their added boost of power through electric motors, making cycling more accessible to a wider demographic. Commuters, enthusiasts, and individuals with physical limitations find e-bikes to be a convenient and efficient mode of transportation.

For instance, electric motorcycles offer commuters a reliable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional cars, with features such as long-lasting batteries and robust frames designed for urban environments. They offer benefits such as assisted pedalling, increased range, speed, and accessibility. However, e-bikes come with drawbacks, including higher upfront costs, maintenance complexity, and added weight due to the motor and battery.

Conventional bikes, on the other hand, remain timeless in their simplicity and effectiveness, relying solely on human power. They offer a traditional cycling experience favoured by purists and fitness enthusiasts alike. Conventional bikes boast advantages such as simplicity, physical exercise, agility, and environmental benefits, emitting zero emissions and promoting a cleaner environment. Yet, they also present challenges such as physical exertion on long distances or steep hills and limited range without the assistance of electric motors.

The rise of electric bikes prompts speculation about whether they represent the future of transportation. Their increasing popularity, coupled with advancements in battery technology and infrastructure, suggests that e-bikes could indeed play a significant role in shaping the future of urban mobility.

By offering a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation methods and addressing concerns such as traffic congestion and air pollution, electric bikes have the potential to revolutionize urban commuting and recreational cycling alike.

Malaysia sees a rising trend in electric mobility, notably in the growing availability of electric motorcycles. The benefits of EV motorcycles are increasingly clear, aided by government support. In Budget 2024, an incentive scheme was launched to promote EV adoption. This signals a significant push towards a sustainable transportation scheme that offers the public a substantial rebate of up to RM2,400 upon purchasing an electric motorcycle. Eligibility for this rebate extends to individuals earning less than RM120,000 annually or less than RM10,000 monthly.

Moreover, the government has implemented tax incentives and free road tax for all EVs, including motorcycles and cars. Until the end of 2025, all-electric motorcycles in Malaysia are entitled to free road tax. Beyond this period, road tax rates for electric motorcycles will be determined based on their motor output in watts (W). The following table outlines the road tax rates according to motor output:

In the face of climate change and environmental degradation, the importance of green technology has become imperative. Both electric bikes and conventional bikes play a role in promoting sustainability, albeit in different ways. Electric bikes bridge the gap between traditional cycling and modern transportation, making cycling accessible while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, they come with environmental costs associated with battery production and electricity generation. Conventional bikes represent the epitome of eco-friendly transportation, relying solely on human power and emitting zero emissions.

Ultimately, the choice between electric bikes and conventional bikes depends on individual preferences, needs, and lifestyles. It takes into account too factors such as budget, terrain, fitness level, and environmental priorities. Embracing green technology and sustainable transportation solutions is crucial in our quest for a cleaner, healthier planet. Choosing electric bikes or supporting conventional cycling moves us towards sustainability. Electric bikes are promising for urban mobility and environmental health in our modern transport landscape.
