Following a lot of rumours and speculations, Yamaha’s much anticipated next-gen sports moped is finally here in Malaysia! Hong Leong Yamaha Motor has just pulled the cover off the  2021 Yamaha Y16ZR in Malaysia today. Yes, we finally know the official name now! Given the popularity of its successor, the Yamaha Y125ZR and Y15ZR, the 2021 Yamaha Y16 ZR is one of the hottest bikes that Yamaha fans have been looking forward to seeing this year.  Speaking of the bike, as speculated, the new Yamaha Y16ZR is very similar to the Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA from Vietnam. Priced at RM 10,888 in Malaysia (excluding insurance, registration fee and road tax), the 2021 Yamaha Y16 ZR is a bang for the buck! Without further ado, let’s take a look at the new hero in town!

2021 Yamaha Y16ZR

Before we dive in, here is something you should know. Compared to the ongoing model, the Yamaha Y15ZR V2, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR gets an array of design and mechanical updates.

Design

Starting with the design, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR gets a brand-new contemporary design from the ground up. You name it, everything from the fairings to the seats and lights has been revised. Upfront the model gets a redesigned two-part headlamp unit, where the low beam is placed on top and the high beam is positioned at the bottom. Besides this, a pair of air ducts make the all-new Yamaha Y16ZR look more aggressive and sporty.

At the rear, the model gets a revised taillight as well. The new Yamaha Y16ZR features a sleeker R1-style LED taillamp unit which is tucked nicely in the narrow tail section. On top of this, the license plate holder and seat have been redesigned as well.

Chassis

Underneath, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR is built around an all-new frame that has been revised to fit the new 155cc VVA engine. The frame now features a new Y-Shaped reinforcement collar and a thicker 4.5mm engine mount. Yamaha says the new chassis has been optimised for enhanced cornering performance at high speeds.

Suspension and braking

Suspension duties are taken care of by a telescopic front fork and a mono-shock at the rear. In the case of braking, hydraulic disc brakes at the front and rear take care of braking duties. However, compared to the Y15ZR the Y16ZR gets a new 2-pot front calliper that works hand in hand with a large 245mm disc for effective braking. Note: the model does not get ABS.

Engine

Moving on to the most important update, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR is powered by a  liquid-cooled 155cc 4-stroke, 4-valve, SOHC,  VVA engine. Mated to an all-new 6-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR produces a maximum power output of 17.7 hp @ 9,500 rpm and a peak torque of 14.4 Nm @ 8,000 rpm.

Yamaha has revised and updated numerous things around the powertrain. To make it easier to understand we have put together details in a list form below.

  • New 6-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch.
  • Shorter clutch handle (10 mm shorter).
  • Compared to one level ignition mapping with a 5-speed gearbox on the 150cc Y15ZR, the new Y16ZR is linked to a new 6-speed gearbox that produces different ignition mapping for each gear.
  • Yamaha’s VVA system-  2 separate cams control the intake valve: one cam for the low- mid-rpm range and the other for the high rpm range. High-speed intake valves have longer opening times, increasing intake air efficiency and overall capacity. VVA operates at 7,400 rpm or more.

Electronics and Rider aids

2021 Yamaha Y16ZR LCD Instrument Panel

In the case of electronics and rider aids, on the inside, the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR gets a new negative LCD instrument cluster with a speedometer, tachometer, gear indicator, VVA indicator, etc.  Besides this, the model gets full LED lighting, a 12 V charging socket and Yamaha Smart Lock with call back function and immobilizer.

Fuel tank capacity and range

The 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR comes with a large 5.4-litre fuel tank and Yamaha claim the Y16ZR can hit a maximum range of 256km (subject to riding style)*.

2021 Yamaha Y16ZR Colour Options and Pricing in Malaysia
