Before indulging in the funs of bike-riding and the excitement from being Speedy Gonzales on the roads, it is vital to ensure you have the necessary motorcycle insurance policy to save up for the rainy day. It is important to have the right type of insurance policy before your joyride as it is a way of sharing the risk with your insurance company. While most riders tend to insure their bikes against third-party liabilities, some may not have insured the motorcycle itself. iMotorbike has taken the liberty to lay down the type of motorcycle insurance policies from Berjaya Sompo that may be suitable for you. Through this, you may be able to decide which is the best plan for you and also get a 10% rebate for when you renew your insurance policy online. It takes only less than two minutes!

The Road Transport Act 1987 states that it is mandatory to have insurance of cars and motorcycles and it must go through annual renewal. A typical motorcycle insurance plan covers a wide range of damages.

There are three primary motorcycle insurances provided by Berjaya Sompo:

  • Comprehensive insurance offers protection against financial loss as it covers damages resulting from fire, explosion, lightning, burglary, housebreaking or theft and accidental damage to the Insured’s vehicle in addition to the protection against the legal liabilities to third party for death and bodily injury and damage to property that may arise through the negligence of the rider.
  • Third-Party, Fire and Theft insurance offers protection for your vehicle against loss or damage caused by fire, explosion, lightning, burglary, housebreaking or theft in addition to third party property damage/bodily injury caused by the negligence of the rider.
  • Third-Party insurance offers protection against financial loss as a result of the damage the driver of the vehicle may cause to the property of a third party. It also provides protection against any claims that may arise because of the death of or injury to another person through the negligence of the rider.

What else do I need to know?

You may gain optional benefits by paying an additional premium. Such consists of legal liability to the pillion, the inclusion of special perils and motorcyclist personal accident. However, notably, not all insurance coverage would allow the owner to have the add-ons. In contrast, certain coverage may include more add-ons. This is subject to the owner’s preferences and priorities.

Usually, the premium payable may vary depending on several factors, including No Claim Discount (NCD). NCD is ‘awarded’ if no claim was made against your policy during the preceding 12 months of Policy. Normally, motorcycles can get up to 25% of NCD. Your NCD entitlement will depend on the class of your vehicle. You can check your eligibility here.

Most importantly, the insurance policies are flexible as you may cancel your policy at any time. All you need to do is to provide written notice to the company. However, a penalty applies if you cancel before the one-year period of your policy. You are entitled to a refund of the premium in accordance with short-period rates.

How to make a claim?

When making a claim, you must first report to the police within 24 hours. Immediately, you must notify your insurance company with full details in writing. The repairs must be conducted by an Authorized Panel Workshop selected and approved by Berjaya Sompo if you make an own damage claim against your own comprehensive Policy.

If you are not at fault in the accident, you can submit the claim either directly to the insurance company of the party at fault. If you have a comprehensive policy, you may submit to your insurance company for speedier claims processing without losing your NCD entitlement.

You will lose your entire NCD entitlement once own damage or a third-party claim is made against your Policy.

To love your motorcycle is to insure it and Sompo Motorcycle Insurance aims to help riders achieve that. For those that want to get a quote, click here and follow four simple steps.
