Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj Auto Limited and British motorcycle brand Triumph Motorcycles will be formally announcing their alliance on January 24, 2020. The two firms will likely be partnering up to build mid-size motorcycles. The plan came into the surface as far back as in 2017 but there was no formal agreement. Although there is no statement regarding what bikes the two brands will produce, sources speculate that it will be a new range of mid-capacity motorcycles in India.

According to sources, Bajaj will have to use its own platform to house the newly developed engine.

“Vehicle platform is not part of the agreement. The agreement is on an IP (intellectual property) basis. Bajaj Auto retains the IP that they have and we retain the IP that we have. There is a royalty element to the relationship. If they develop any products using their IP, they are completely free to do that, but if they were to use Triumph IP, then we would have to have a conversation,” says Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer, Triumph Motorcycles as quoted from First Post.

Triumph has been conducting early testing of prototypes. Information is still scarce as to when the final production-ready models will be available commercially. The announcement will provide details of the partnership between the two brands. Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj had visited Triumph headquarters in Hinckley, UK late last year. It is likely that the new range will be available by 2022.

Triumph will be marketing the bikes in India. The new bikes will cater to the Indian, South East Asian, and Latin American audience and not for developed markets like the US and Europe.
