With Andrea Dovizioso not willing to agree on a new contract deal with Ducati, and with Jorge Lorenzo closer than ever to make a switch to Ecstar Suzuki, Ducati has turned their attentions to Andrea Iannone, who is on a verge of losing his place at Suzuki to Lorenzo.
Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO, flew over to Jerez this past weekend to try and finish a deal with Dovizioso, Ducati top priority at the moment, but it seems that the 2017 MotoGP runner-up isn’t going to accept any offer from Ducati, even if his salary is raised. Rumours coming from Italian media point out that Dovizioso has on its hands an offer from HRC to get back on the Repsol Honda team.
Seeing he can’t retain any of the current Ducati riders, Domenicali said at Jerez that Ducati is already working on alternatives.
And one of the riders Ducati is negotiating with seems to Andrea Iannone.
Claudio Domenicali said that for next season the factory Ducati team could see an “excellent return”, and that probably means that Iannone will be back on the team after switching from Ducati to Suzuki at the end of the 2016 season.
Only time will tell what Claudio Domenicali really means when he says an “excellent return”, but the strongest possibility is that Andrea Iannone is making a comeback to the Italian MotoGP team.
