Russian scientists to come up with a space motorcycle for astronauts

Russian scientists to come up with a space motorcycle for astronauts

We have read about men on the moon but are we ready to see motorcycles in outer space? Rockets, spaceships, space crafts are many more are the terms we are used to when talking about venturing outside Earth but motorcycles is a rather unorthodox form of vehicle. In fact, Russian space agency Roscosmos has unveiled its thorough plans from Russain scientists who are keen to build a “motorcycle” for astronauts to use when in outer space.

Of course, it would be absurd to think that astronauts would be able to ride bikes the same way as how we do on land but it is safe to say that the vehicle would be a useful device for space walks. It would be rather different compared to the traditional motorcycles. Astronauts will be seated in a harnessed flight craft which would rest around their waist and propel them about in zero gravity.

The idea of this bike has yet to be brought into reality considering the production is extremely slow. However, the space bike is not a recent idea as scientists have long come up with this concept since the 1960s. The idea stemmed from the thought of the mobility of the astronauts outside spaceships. Albeit minimal, astronauts should be able to move around without the fear of being stranded out of reach, hence the Russians have spearheaded the game by coming up with ways to create a space motorcycle.

In the 1980s, the concept was revised and reworked using new technology named the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). This did not work as well as astronauts simply were not willing to go out onto the hull of a space station without a tether.

Roscosmos has insisted that the original space motorcycle will be perfected and scientists are already working on the design. Whether the bike will present itself is a matter of time. We know we certainly cannot wait to see what they have come up with! What about you?
