Brembo announces recall for potential brake failure – master cylinder issue

Brembo has issued a product recall for its PR16 radial master cylinder unit. Commonly paired to its M50 calipers, the famed Italian brakes manufacturer has announced that the recall stems from a potential failure in the piston of the master cylinder.

According to Brembo, cracks could develop within said piston of the master cylinder which in turn, could lead to the front brakes failing. The reason for this is that the piston was fashioned out of a type of plastic known as polyphenylene sulphide which is susceptible to cracks under heavy abuse.

Close to 18k units of the Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono 1100 have been recalled in the US.

What exactly constitutes as heavy abuse? According to reports, the piston could well fail after prolonged use on track, regular ABS intervention and if the motorcycle has been dropped. So, close to anything you do could cause it to fail, then.

As a precautionary measure, Brembo has said that it will replace the aforementioned plastic piece with one made out of aluminium. The total number of models affected is not yet known at the moment but reports are in that close to 1,800 motorcycles consisting of the Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono 1100 have been recalled in the US.
