Spaniard becomes the first woman to win the world championship

In a male-dominated industry such as motorcycling, Ana Carrasco is here to prove that females can thrive in racing just as much as men can and she definitely made good use of her effort as she became the first woman to win a world championship motorcycle race on Sunday in Portimão, Portugal.

Hailing from Spain, the 20-year-old raced passed the flags in her Kawasaki by less than a tenth of a second.

Ana Carrasco has participated in international competitions since 2013. At the age of 16, she became the first woman in 12 years to score points in a world championship race. She competed in the Moto3 but left it after three years. After that, she joined a new series- Supersport 300.

“I am very happy about this result,” said Carrasco to World SBK.  “We have worked very hard and we have been making progress in each race.”

Not to mention, Carrasco also conceded the lack of female riders in the industry.

“Women will never be a majority, this is clear,” said  Carrasco.

“I suppose there will be more women in the entry list, but ultimately what is hoped for is that we all have the same opportunities and that the world championships are the best.”
